Desperate donkeys safe after rescue
Maramunda
Maramunda and her owner are both quite elderly and feeling the effects of advancing years! Her owner asked if we could take care of 31year old Maramunda and so we collected her on 18th January 2012. Bless her, she has foot problems and arthritis but with plenty of TLC, some medication and a nice rug to keep her warm she is already feeling a little more comfortable.
Georgie II
Georgie II is about 21 years old and, like Kykkos, belonged to a very elderly man – 90 years old! He was also a working donkey but due to his owner’s age, needed a bit more care. His owner asked if we could give him a home and we collected him on 19th January 2012. A little bit more weight and he will be perfect!
Kykko
Kykkos was born around 1990 and has been a working donkey nearly all of his life. His elderly owner contacted us asking if we could take Kykkos as the donkey was now too old to work and his owner was finding it difficult to look after him. He has been well cared for and, after his arrival on 21st Dec 2011, is now out of his Isolation period and making lots of new friends!
Tom
Sixteen year old Tom was already known to us. Two years ago his owner contacted us asking if we could help sort out a problem with his donkey’s knee. Luckily we could and so Tom came to us for an operation and spent several weeks at Vouni recovering.
Half-term events
With Valentine’s Day falling in half term this year, The Donkey Sanctuary will be hosting a week of events starting Saturday 11th February for families who love donkeys and the countryside at our headquarters here in Sidmouth, Devon.
Every day, families can take part in:
- a Valentine-themed treasure hunt, searching for heart-shaped clues around the sanctuary

'Hackers' ride out to help rescued donkeys
Back in November my colleagues in Northern Ireland helped rescue 10 donkeys and 16 horses from appalling conditions as part of a mass rescue of more than 60 equines in County Antrim. These animals had been shut in squalid conditions without food or water and left knee deep in their own excrement - for some, the rescue effort sadly came too late.
Peropalo 2012
On Tuesday 21st of February 2012, with the knowledge of both the Local Council and the government of Extremadura, once again, a defenceless donkey will be condemned to be dragged, pushed and pulled through the streets of Villanueva de la Vera, a small town with no more than 2000 people. The donkey will be forced to endure, as part of a local ‘fiesta’, stress, violence and suffering.
The Dutch Barn Escort Team
After reading recently the very sad news about Jubilee, the lovely donkey who we all loved and who was part of the "Meet and Greet Team" down at the main sanctuary in Sidmouth, it made us think about a little group of four donkeys here at Axnoller Farm who also do a wonderful job of meeting, greeting and escorting us when we visit them every week.
The Donkey Sanctuary/Elisabeth Svendsen Trust charity merger
Today, the Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys has announced that it has merged into animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary.
The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys officially merged into The Donkey Sanctuary, which supports projects in 28 countries worldwide to alleviate the suffering of donkeys and mules, on 1st January 2012.

The Festival of Peropalo continues
The carnival of Peropalo takes place in the Spanish village of Villanueva de la Vera on Shrove Tuesday each year. During the festivities, it is traditional for a donkey to be pulled through the very narrow cobbled streets of the village, ridden by an intoxicated rider and surrounded by a large crowd, some of whom fire shotguns.
Peropalo 2012
Il Rifugio closed for snow and ice
Dear supporters, due to the huge amount of snow and ice, Il Rifugio will be closed until Monday 6th February.
Stay warm!

Can you give a loving home to two (or more) donkeys?
Our Foster Carers often tell us how much fun it is to give a loving home to these fantastic animals. The great thing is that our Foster Donkeys and mules love it too.
Take a look at our Foster donkey stories to find out more about the Foster Scheme and read about some of our fantastic Foster Carers talking about their experiences of fostering donkeys.
