Peropalo 2012
On Tuesday 21st of February 2012, with the knowledge of both the Local Council and the government of Extremadura, once again, a defenceless donkey will be condemned to be dragged, pushed and pulled through the streets of Villanueva de la Vera, a small town with no more than 2000 people. The donkey will be forced to endure, as part of a local ‘fiesta’, stress, violence and suffering.

Este año en Villanueva de la Vera, Cáceres, el día 21 de Febrero, como cada martes de carnaval, si las autoridades competentes vuelven, una vez más, a permitirlo, un animal indefenso se verá de nuevo forzado a participar en las celebraciones del Peropalo.

El Refugio del Burrito (ERB), a subsidiary of The Donkey Sanctuary in the UK, is a donkey rescue charity based in Fuente de Piedra (Andalucía). We currently operate across three sites in Spain. Care and shelter is provided for over 220 rescued donkeys and mules at our headquarters at Fuente de Piedra and our second farm at Bodonal de la Sierra (Badajoz). We also have a base at Cordoba Zoo, where we provide riding therapy for children with special needs.

El Refugio del Burrito (ERB), subsidiaria de “The Donkey Sanctuary” en el Reino Unido, es una asociación sin ánimo de lucro dedicada al rescate de burros y mulos, con sede en Fuente de Piedra (Andalucía). En este momento tenemos tres centros de trabajo en España. Proporcionamos refugio y cuidados a más de 220 burros y mulos rescatados en nuestra sede de Fuente de Piedra y nuestra segunda granja en Bodonal de la Sierra, Badajoz. También contamos con un centro de trabajo en el Zoo de Córdoba, donde llevamos a cabo un programa de Terapia Asistida con Asnos para Niños con Necesidades Especiales.
Nuevo Comienzo
Año nuevo, vida nueva. Esta frase no podía ser más adecuada para los animales que, a continuación, os vamos a presentar. Son los primeros en llegar al Refugio del Burrito en este 2012 que acabamos de estrenar.

With the New Year, a new life has also begun for some donkeys and mules; the very first ones to join our big family in 2012.
From Almería in South-Eastern Spain, three animals have just joined us. They are Juan, Andrea, Negrita, Rosy and Poppy.

Hace escasamente un mes, varios empleados del Refugio del Burrito, pensaron que sería bonito e interesante participar en una convocatoria que la cadena autonómica Andaluza Canal Sur Televisión” estaba promocionando para que todos los andaluces se felicitasen la Navidad con vídeos hechos por ellos mismos y que serían emitidos en dicha cadena durante las fechas Navideñas.

Not a month ago, some workers at El Refugio del Burrito thought it nice and interesting that we participated in a Project from the Andalucian TV Station "Canal Sur Televisión", whereby anyone could send a video that would later be broadcast in the station to wish Andalucía a very merry Christmas.

Las Multas para los Taxis Turísticos Son la Esperanza de los Burritos de Santorini
La asociación internacional para el bienestar animal "The Donkey Sanctuary" celebra el nuevo sistema de multas, que trae esperanzas de mejores condiciones para los burros y mulos que trabajan como taxis turísticos en la isla griega de Santorini.

Tourist taxi fines bring hope for Santorini donkeys
International animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary is today celebrating as a new system of fines brings hope of improved conditions for donkeys and mules working as tourist taxis on the Greek island of Santorini. Andrew Judge, The Donkey Sanctuary’s Head of European Operations, explains:
“The new system of fines symbolises a real breakthrough in the recognition of animal welfare on the island. After years of campaigning, and working closely with SAWA (Santorini Animal Welfare Association) and the local authorities, we recently established a code of practice in the Municipality of Fira, setting out acceptable standards of animal welfare and ensuring that only animals fit enough to work are allowed to do so. It also sets out limits on the number of donkeys and mules an operator can hire out as tourist taxis on any one day. In September we were delighted to see this code of practice enforced by fines for those who were found not to comply with this legislation which protects the welfare of these hardworking animals.
