Two more dates in Summer for Introductive course to donkeys' care
After the good success of first editions, we are pleased to announce more days dedicated to “Introductive course to donkeys’ care”, on 6th July and 31st August.
Contest "Give hope a name": and the winner is...
130 participants, a lot of funny, original names, a big help for Il Rifugio and... only one winner: during 1st May Grooming Day, a child drawn the winning ticket of our contest. Lucky smiled to Lisa Suzanne: since yesterday afternoon, two donkeys have their brand new names Coco and Carl.
2-4 August: first Italian Donkey Weekend for your special holiday at Il Rifugio
Donkey Sanctuary supporters already know it: Donkey Week is a cult event for charity and allows all donkey lovers to try a unique experience and a full immersion in donkeys’ lives. Now we are pleased to announce you that this year, for the first time, even our Rifugio will held a similar event, a Donkey Weekend which will take place from 2 to 4 August in our Italian base.
1st May at Il Rifugio: Grooming Day and drawning of the winning ticket to find a name for two donkeys!
On 1st May Il Rifugio will host the Grooming Day: don't miss this event if you wish to spend some quality time with our wonderful donkeys!
From 2 pm to 6.30 pm you will learn how to groom donkeys and our Staff will teach you a lot of interesting things about their daily care.
Farewell Dipsy...
Dear friends and supporters,
with deep sorrow we are writing to announce you that last Monday our beloved Dipsy was put to sleep because her health conditions no longer allowed her a dignified life. She was 26.

Sunday 24th March: first Grooming Day of this year!
In order to welcome Spring, Il Rifugio wish to invite all donkeys' lovers to Spring Grooming Day: event will take place on Sunday 24th March from 2 pm to 5 pm at Il Rifugio (via per Zubiena, 62 - Sala Biellese, BI).
"Everyone will have the chance to learn more about grooming - i.e. donkeys' daily care with" explains Country Manager Barbara Massa. Grooming Days are great opportunities to know our donkeys better and to pet them without fences in between.
Contest - Help two donkeys and help us building new areas for confiscated animals
Colleferro’s emergency, with the arrival of 21 confiscated animals, has caused Il Rifugio’s reach of maximum homing capacity. When animals are under confiscation, authorities must find adequate areas and fosterers: otherwise it often happens that animals are given back again to their previous owner, even if he’s under investigation for mistreatments.

PRESS RELEASE from The Donkey Sanctuary - 20th February 2013
Late last night 16 donkeys and 5 mules arrived at The Donkey Sanctuary’s main Italian rescue centre at Sala Biellese, near Turin. The donkeys were recently rescued from appalling conditions by the charity, from an Italian equine trader in Colleferro, Italy.
