El Refugio del Burrito is the first European subsidiary of The Donkey Sanctuary, a non-profit charity based in the UK, that has worked for over 40 years to protect the donkey worldwide.
The Donkey Sanctuary also has projects in:
as well as operational bases in other European countries such as:
- Romania,
- Greece,
- France,
- Portugal.
El Refugio del Burrito has helped more than 500 donkeys and mules in Spain and Europe and currently monitors over 200 donkeys and mules.
We also investigate cases of abuse or neglect, or any public complaint that concerns donkeys and mules.
El Refugio del Burrito is actively involved in causes that encourage the application and improvement of existing laws regarding animal welfare and the promotion of awareness campaigns and protests.
We also try to get the best conditions for those animals that still are used for work, mainly in the tourism industry, such as the Burro-Taxi Mijas.
