The rescue of Peregona

After having to postpone her collection due to the terrible weather conditions and state of the roads for about 2 weeks, yesterday we were finally able to bring Peregona the mule into our care. She is our newest arrival here at El Refugio del Burrito and is a 23 year old female mule. Peregona had lived with her owners for the majority of her life and had worked on their land with them but now they are too old to care for her anymore and did not want her to go for slaughter.

Peregona was very happy to be rescued and walked into the trailer where she was given feed for her journey to El Refugio, it was a difficult drive home due to the state of the road due to the amount of rain we have had, but she travelled very well munching on her hay net the whole time!

Peregona arrived safely and is now making friends with the many other rescued donkeys and mules at El Refugio, Having been on her own for so many years we hope she will adapt well to her new environment.
