Two births to celebrate 7th Anniversary

Romera, Romina and foals

Coinciding with the week when we celebrate our 7th anniversary as an association in Spain, two of the pregnant mares we took in last year have given birth, which adds to the joy of celebrating our continuous work in this country for the past years.

Staff at El Refugio del Burrito have been eagerly waiting for the foaling of two pregnant mares, Romera and Romina, that were taken in last year from Cádiz.

According to the vets, the new foals were due around May, so ever since, El Refugio del Burrito’s staff had been keeping an extra close eye to the mares in preparation for the expected births. As donkeys usually give birth during darkness, night checkes had also been introduced but nature works in mysterious ways and it wasn’t until last Tuesday the 29th in the afternoon that things started happening.

On the early hours of Tuesday afternoon, Romera, started showing signs and at around 5 pm, without any complications a new foal was born in the specially prepared stable. The male foal is big and strong and very inquisative.

Twenty odd hours later, Romina, also showed signs. Learna Seward, Farm Manager at Fuente de Piedra Farm says “We thought there would be complications with this birth at first, so we made sure Romina had enough space to herself, to make her foaling as easy as possible” It was 1 pm when her baby, a beautiful girl, this time, was born. “We are happy to say everything went well in the end , and no assistance was needed during the birth”

These two events will make our seventh anniversary as an association on July the third extra special.

It is thanks to the charity’s supporters, that moments like this can be enjoyed at our refuges. To keep making it happen, we still need all the help you can give.
