Aventura
Sometimes, even our smiley Ivan has sadness in his eyes. It is because he has had a bad day; one of those days when you know you have done the right thing although the decisions that you have had to take seem somewhat unrewarding.
Last Friday was one of those days; Ivan went to investigate a phone call that we had received from a resident of Setenil de las Bodegas, situated in the province of Cadiz. A little donkey known as Aventura had been rescued by Miguel; Aventura was suffering with a very nasty wound in her front left leg, the severe injury had been caused by hobbling (when the two front legs are tied together so the donkey can not move far whilst grazing). Ivan and Guillermo, our vet, had gone to visit Aventura to see if there was anything they could do to help her. Meanwhile, at the farm, Trevor was waiting for Ivan's call, ready to go and rescue the donkey in our lorry.
Unfortunately, the lorry was not necessary, Ivan and Guillermo had to make the hard decision to put the poor donkey to sleep and end her suffering, her life experience had not been a happy one.
Those awful ropes that some people use to hobble their donkeys and the poor ways in which they use them, cause terrible injuries that most of the time are not curable, unfortunately this is not the first time that we have seen such injuries and we are sure it won’t be the last either.
