New Inhabitants of El Refugio del Burrito
With the arrival of spring, our sanctuaries come alive. We are not only home to donkeys and mules, but also to many other species.

At El Refugio del Burrito we understand the only way to change the world for the better for donkeys and mules is through education and raising awareness. Our Donkey Welfare Team has organised an online Basic Donkey Care course on 20 December 2021.
The course will start from 9:00 to 14:00 (+1 GTM) and the only thing you need to follow it is a device with access to internet.
The course aims at sharing all the essential knowledge regarding behaviour, stable and paddock needs, handling, health and much more.
A few weeks ago our Welfare team were forwarded a post from Diario Animalista circulating on social media, requesting urgent help for a young donkey in Cartagena, now named Camaron, with a massive gaping wound on his neck. The post stated that although the authorities had been called the donkey was still there suffering. We immediately tried to get hold of the newspaper who published the post to find out more and also contacted the Guardia Civil.
After two weeks of dedication, teamwork and expert care, we have managed to save the life of Telerin, a rescue donkey suffering from open, infected wounds and an enormous gash from one side of his abdomen to the other.
Our Welfare team was contacted last month by a lady who initially saved Telerin from being sent to the slaughterhouse. The person who took Telerin in was unable to keep him as, despite his sweet nature, he was a stallion donkey surrounded by females, she had limited space and the situation wasn’t sustainable.
Find out what causes sarcoids in donkeys, we have put together some advice on the skin tumours. Understand the different types of sarcoid and what treatment is available.
“The donkey has always helped man, in most parts of the world it still does, and it never asks for anything in exchange”
Dr. Elisabeth Svendsen MBE – Founder of The Donkey Sanctuary
Three months ago, we launched an urgent appeal to help support 42 donkeys and mules in need of new homes after their owner was prosecuted for an alleged continual crime of animal abuse in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz).
The Spanish team is very pleased to welcome Elena Barrio as a new Country Manager. As a former Veterinarian at our headquarters The Donkey Sanctuary in UK, Elena has been responsible for providing advice, which shapes the best veterinarian donkey practices, and supervising the new intake of donkeys into the sanctuaries in UK since 2005.
El Refugio del Burrito has launched an urgent appeal to help support 37 donkeys and mules in need of new homes after their owner was accused for an alleged continuing crime of animal abuse
The Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard Command of Algeciras has proceeded to accuse a neighbour of the town of La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz) as the alleged perpetrator of a continuing crime of animal abuse on 12 horses and donkeys that caused serious injuries and even the death of six of them.
We are sure we don’t need to tell you, but donkeys are wonderful creatures and make the greatest of friends! We feel very lucky taking care of our beautiful rescue animals, and we love every single one of them for their unique qualities and perks; ideally we would like to keep them all with us forever. But the reality is that there is not enough space in our sanctuaries to home the many animals that need our help most: the ones we currently don’t know yet, and are still out there waiting for our help.
