Romero
Romero is very special to us, being the first donkey to come to El Refugio.
He came from the coastal town of Mijas, where he spent most of his life working as a donkey taxi. Although he's worked very hard for many years, he is a very active and much-loved donkey. He now enjoys his retirement at El Refugio, a just reward to all those years of hard work.
Orange Saturdays
Our Romero, apart from being a Casanova, is a donkey with an epic appetite… we suppose that’s why he has developed an incredible sense of smell when it comes to food. Thanks to this, no Saturday goes unnoticed for him. Saturday is when Adrián, our grocer, brings in the carrot delivery Romero loves so much. Although his paddock is quite a way away from where the carrots are unloaded... He’s always got some good braying ready for the grocery man!

Santa's coming...
Our very own Casanova never stops thinking about ideas to impress the ladies, the latest one being in its special way, quite a good one. He’s heard over the grapevine that a Santa outfit is being made for Romerito, El Refugio’s Mascot for the upcoming festive season. He is cunningly thinking about “borrowing” it for a night and surprise the babies – Alicia, Ruby and Ryan- with carrot and apple presents… our only worry is that he pretends to arrive by sleigh… reindeer included! But this, he reckons, would steal the females’ hearts all around the sanctuary.

Romero secures his place in Hall of Fame
Romero is the true star of El Refugio del Burrito, with astonishing good looks that send tingles up every female’s spine and the honour of being the very first donkey to ever come to us, he has secured a place at El Refugio’s Hall of Fame... and he knows it!
Being 28 already, he is in amazingly great shape. He enjoys a fuss from visitors, and is always ready to do his donkey cat walk for everyone to admire him... but there is one heart he has yet to conquer, and that is Estrella’s. Every time she walks past his paddock he just melts like butter!
