Large group of homeless donkeys and mules are safe!
Three months ago, we launched an urgent appeal to help support 42 donkeys and mules in need of new homes after their owner was prosecuted for an alleged continual crime of animal abuse in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz).
Once Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza (SEPRONA) seized the animals, we helped to provide life-saving treatment for those that were in worst condition and worked tirelessly looking for adoption homes for the rest of them. After carefully assessing the potential homes, we worked on the practicalities and logistics of moving all these animals to their fabulous forever homes. We are not going to lie, it has been a long journey with a lot of work and obstacles, but a worthy one.
We were especially worried for some of the equines. In fact, five mules and two donkeys were in such bad condition due to a lack of proper care and veterinary treatment for so long that we could only help in alleviating their suffering in their last hours. We also sadly lost Flor’s foal. Flor was pregnant and very weak, and her foal died during birth. With medication, a good diet and lots of love, Flor has recovered from her physical injuries, and she is living a healthy and happy life with other donkeys at the Donkey Dreamland sanctuary.
Still, despite the sadness of these eight losses, we were able to act quickly and help the rest of these animals. All the weak pregnant jennies are now much stronger, following proper treatment and nutritious diet. In fact, three have already delivered healthy and happy beautiful foals in their forever homes.
Peluso, the male donkey who had a big cyst in his mouth, had an intricate yet successful surgery to remove the tumour. He is now happily adopted with Zamorano, another male donkey from this case, thriving in Victoria’s fantastic home.
A 15-year-old mule with a chronic tendon injury in his front legs was the last animal in need of a home from this case. He was such a handsome chap with a gentle affectionate character and good handling. He's in good general health, although underweight due to previously poor diet and lack of care. We are pleased to report that the animal sanctuary Las Arenillas in Sevilla offered him a forever home, where he is living free in a huge open paddock with the company of a gentle horse and very much attached already to his adoptive mother Fatima.
We are so pleased for all of the rescued equines and very thankful to their adoptive homes, as they are all safe now and enjoying a life worth living. In this short video you can see where they are now and how they are enjoying their lives in a safe and comfortable environment with the individual care that they need.
Again, all this was only possible with your support. We are very grateful for all the people who supported this case adopting, donating or just sharing our appeal. It gives us strength knowing that there are many people who support our cause and walk with us together in this difficult journey. THANK YOU ALL.
