Tourist taxi fines bring hope for Santorini donkeys
Submitted by Rafael Benjumea on Tue, 25/10/2011 - 07:14International animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary is today celebrating as a new system of fines brings hope of improved conditions for donkeys and mules working as tourist taxis on the Greek island of Santorini. Andrew Judge, The Donkey Sanctuary’s Head of European Operations, explains:
“The new system of fines symbolises a real breakthrough in the recognition of animal welfare on the island. After years of campaigning, and working closely with SAWA (Santorini Animal Welfare Association) and the local authorities, we recently established a code of practice in the Municipality of Fira, setting out acceptable standards of animal welfare and ensuring that only animals fit enough to work are allowed to do so. It also sets out limits on the number of donkeys and mules an operator can hire out as tourist taxis on any one day. In September we were delighted to see this code of practice enforced by fines for those who were found not to comply with this legislation which protects the welfare of these hardworking animals.
El Rocío 2011
Submitted by Rafael Benjumea on Wed, 06/07/2011 - 09:23El Refugio del Burrito was present at this year’s edition of El Rocío pilgrimage to evaluate the situation regarding the welfare of donkeys and mules at this famous festival. We have been gathering all the information to present you with a report on what we saw, and what we think could be improved. We will also be sending a letter to the Mayor of Almonte highlighting the problems and offering ideas for improvement on subsequent editions.
This is the information we were able to gather:
There were over 17,000 animals in Rocio during the 11th to the 13th of June (about 4000 of these were mules and 500 donkeys). Animals were arriving from all over Spain; however no controls were done, neither to see the paperwork of the animals, microchip or the general health of the animals.
We Can Stop Peropalo
Submitted by Rafael Benjumea on Tue, 08/03/2011 - 16:00It was back in 1986 that The Donkey Sanctuary was first made aware of a Festival that involved a donkey in the village of Villanueva de La Vera, Cáceres. Ever since then, and subsequently since the start of its Spanish Subsidiary El Refugio del Burrito so has this Spanish Registered Charity, The English Charity has been trying to stop the use of the donkey in a Festival that causes the animal great distress and sometimes, even physical injuries.
La Corrida de Elecciones is a ritual included in the carnival celebrations locally known as Peropalo. During this ritual, a donkey ridden by a man in disguise depicting the Peropalo, is practically dragged along the streets of the village amidst a drunken crowd that do not hesitate in firing guns too near the donkey and its rider. This ritual can take anything from one hour to two and a half, depending on the weather and the number of people attending the festival. The ordeal for the donkey is as terrible as obvious. He is usually so scared that he ends up falling down. The mob’s response is usually to get him up on its feet in any way they fancy. There has been cases where the donkey has been kicked, had its hair pulled and even been bitten by its rider.
Eight Hours Campaign
Submitted by Rafael Benjumea on Wed, 02/03/2011 - 13:56El Refugio del Burrito is supporting Animals Angels in its campaign to limit the travel time for all animals being transported for slaughter to 8 hours, we have campaigned for years to improve conditions for donkeys and mules transported for meat and we along with many other welfare organisations want to see a limit imposed. Please click on this link www.8hours.eu and sign the petition supporting the limiting of the 8 hour transport rule.
If you would like to help us continue our fight against the use of donkeys please make a donation.
Peropalo 2011
Submitted by Rafael Benjumea on Mon, 31/01/2011 - 13:20On Tuesday 8th of March 2011, with the knowledge of both the Local Council and the government of Extremadura, a defenceless donkey will be condemned to be dragged, pushed and pulled through the streets of Villanueva de la Vera, a small town with no more than 2000 people. The donkey will be forced to endure, as part of a local ‘fiesta’, stress, violence and suffering.
This ceremony consists of a donkey being ridden through the streets by the drunkest man of the village. The ritual lasts approximately 1 hour and during this time the donkey is violently pushed and bullied through the streets. The poor animal is accompanied by a huge crowd with some people shooting guns and ringing cattle bells. In previous ceremonies, the donkey has been known to fall several times due to pure exhaustion and dragged back to his feet being forced to continue. On other occasions the donkey’s ears have been bitten causing it excruciating pain.

Terrified donkey thrown to the sky tethered to a parasail
Submitted by Ivan Salvia on Thu, 22/07/2010 - 08:10The following statement has been produced by The Donkey Sanctuary in response to the press coverage surrounding donkey cruelty in Russia.
Statement
We are absolutely shocked and appalled to learn that a donkey was made to parasail over a beach resort in Russia last week as part of an advertising publicity stunt.
The donkey was strapped to the parasail and catapulted into the sky and would have been severely distressed, fearful and traumatised during the 30-minute flight. Donkeys are sensitive creatures and prone to suffer with a fatal condition called hyperlipaemia (a stress-related illness); we therefore have serious concerns over the present health of this donkey.
El Refugio del Burrito condemns the Municipality of Santorini because of mistreatment of taxi donkeys
In the blistering heat of a Greek Summer thousands of tourists unload from a massive Cruise ship and are ferried ashore to the small port of Fira in Santorini. The options of getting to the small town high above are either by cable car or Donkey Taxi, because the cable car is quickly flooded by the tourists a queue quickly builds for the donkeys. Over 200 of them have been tied the hot sun for hours waiting for the first of the tourists to arrive. There is a shelter and water available a little way up the steps the owners choose not rest the animals there as it is not so convenient, instead they take up most of the last fifty meters of steps to the loading area. Any tourist wanting to walk up the steps must first try and pass the large mules and donkeys who do not have enough room to stand properly and are wearing heavy equipment.
Using sticks and shouts the owners berate the animals if they do not react quickly enough to them which all ads to the chaos.
The tourist mount the donkeys and start the exhausting journey to the top of the hundreds of steps. Any person is taken large or small and unfortunately because it is easier to load a large person on a small donkey the small donkey often has the biggest load.
Once unloaded the donkeys either carry down tourists wanting to return to the port or are hurried down again.
Help us stop this barbaric act
Submitted by Rafael Benjumea on Tue, 16/02/2010 - 13:40Today is "Corrida de Elecciones" day. Despite all our efforts and the promises of the President of Extremadura, a defenceless donkey is being dragged around the streets of Villanueva de la Vera (Cáceres). One of our welfare officers is attending the ritual to collect evidence of this cruel treatment and to help the donkey if need be. At the moment, in spite of the insistent rain, the donkey is being prepared for the "Corrida de Elecciones" ritual.
