Volunteering at El Refugio del Burrito

As a charity, we warmly welcome people who are willing to volunteer for us. Depending on what side of the work we do you want to volunteer for, there are different traits we look for in volunteers. Do you want to volunteer? A love for animals is essential! All volunteers must show the uttermost respect for both the animals and the staff at El Refugio del Burrito. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us.

Inspiring fundraiser stories

Volunteers bring colour to ERB!

Volunteers helping to paint the farm

Last weekend was a very special one here at ERB. A small bunch of volunteers from around the country gathered at our Fuente de Piedra farm to paint stables, and get them ready for our newcomers.

Early on Saturday morning, although already quite warm in the Spanish sunshine, they all got together, led by our General Manager, Iván.

Animal welfare volunteers needed

Alora rescue

Do you care about donkeys and mules? Do you have any practical experience with equines or are you keen to learn and have a little time to spare? We are looking for volunteers to be our ‘extra eyes’ by regularly following up welfare complaints, investigations as well as giving advice and support to many donkeys and mule owners. As you can imagine, trying to cover the whole of Spain takes a lot of manpower and so the more help we can get, the better life could for the donkeys and mules throughout the country.

If you wish to help but you are unable to travel to us, there is still something you can do. You can also help by spreading the word and supporting the work of El Refugio del Burrito online. You may have a blog, or a website and may want to put a link to our website in there. You are always able to support our campaigns, both on our website or on Facebook, by signing on to them.

Riding therapy volunteers

First riding therapy session

Volunteering for our Donkey Assisted Riding Therapy sessions is a truly rewarding task. You will be helping so the session runs smoothly, either by helping children on the donkeys or setting up the arena and clearing the area after the session.

Welfare volunteers

Donkey ears!

Are you passionate about animal welfare? If so, and you have some time to spare, you could be one of our welfare volunteers. We are looking for people in different parts of the country who may be able to, on request, go and check on welfare cases, take pictures and send us information about the animals to assess the situation before we send our welfare officer to take care of the situation. Any help will be most welcome.

Farm volunteers

You can either volunteer on a regular basis, or stay with us for a set period of time. For the last choice, we usually ask our volunteers to stay a minimum of one week.

Work consists mainly of mucking out stables and feeding the animals, but there are also opportunities to groom or help the vets and farrier at work.

We are able to provide basic accommodation, providing we have sufficient notice. There are also some places to stay nearby in case you want to source your own accommodation. Transport will be provided by the volunteer, but we can arrange an airport pick up if necessary.
