Bercebú is happy with Óliver once again

At the end of August, Bercebú, one of our donkeys in a Donkey Guardian home, lost his beloved companion Rocco.

During the whole time Rocco was in hospital, Bercebú stayed by his side, but unfortunately things didn't go well and he had to go back home without his beloved companion.

Once there, his adoptive parents Marian and Daniel noticed that Bercebú did not stop braying (a behaviour not typical for him). They made sure to give Bercebú all the affection and attention he demanded while our welfare team continued to search for, and train, a new companion.

Latest news from your adoption donkey - Autumn 22

Alicia has spent summer with Toto. The two have watched their friendship grow as they have played and walked in the paddock. However, with the arrival of autumn, Alicia seems to be more interested in spending time with the rest of the mares of the herd - all friendships must be nurtured equally!

Apache is becoming more and more curious every day. He always takes advantage of his caregivers' breakfast time to stick his head out of the window, say hello and see if there is a piece of carrot or apple for him.

Vaccinations for your Donkey

Vaccinations are a safe and effective way of preventing disease in donkeys. In the past vaccinations have often been overlooked or disregarded in donkeys, making them much more vulnerable to diseases.

A ‘primary course’ of injections must be given followed by ‘booster’ vaccinations to keep the protection topped up. The intervals between the injections of the primary course and boosters varies according to the type of vaccine and the disease that they protect against.

Why should vaccinate your donkey?

Coloured collars explained - What they tell about our donkeys

One thing we are always asked about while grooming the donkeys is about the plastic collars they wear and what the different colours mean.

The two main colours are red and yellow.

  • Red for castrated boys or geldings.
  • Yellow for girls or mares.

On these collars will be the name of the donkey, their current age and The Donkey Sanctuary admission number. The staff also like to customise them with lots of decorative hearts.

3 Activities to improve mental stimulation

With the arrival of summer, the grass is getting scarce, making it very likely that your donkey will get bored and need a bit of extra mental stimulation.

Now that days are longer and the holidays are here, there is no excuse: here are 3 activities to spend quality time with your donkey and improve their mental stimulation:

Lifeline for Peru’s donkey-owning families

Donkey-owning communities in remote areas of Peru have received vital training and equipment thanks to a collaborative project launched by The Donkey Sanctuary and partner organisation Innovar y Compatir (Innovate and Share).

The project helped ease the pressures imposed on families in the Maras District of Cusco, following the sudden lockdown caused by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

León is retiring

After his 20th birthday, is time for León to retire. As you know, his health has been a bit delicate recently and we also want to give other donkeys the opportunity to receive your affection.

His place in the adoption programme will be taken by Artemisa, but don't worry: León's adopters will still be able to continue adopting him. The only change is that he will not be available for new adoptions.

The ‘Farm of Horrors’

We have secured the safety of three donkeys who were left in darkness to suffer alongside many other desperate and dying animals in a “farm of horrors”. We responded to a tip-off about the farm in Bormujos, Sevilla, and we were horrified by what we found.

“The smell of death was devastating,” said Veronica Sanchez, sanctuary director. “Two horses were in an advanced state of decomposition and there were a multitude of bones from many animals scattered all over the ground. Next to this cemetery, other animals were still alive but had no food or water.”

Jasmin, abandonment and overgrown hooves

Jasmin could barely walk due to the lenght of her hooves. She has been neglected for 13 years when we came to her rescue earlier this year.

A citizen from Monturque (Cordoba) called us very worry about the situation of this poor donkey.

Jasmin's hooves were so overgrown that she could barely walk and her life was at risk.

In this video you can see her progress.

Jasmin is now at our Sanctuary, she is enjoying her trimmed hooves and her new life. She can finally walk, run and be happy.
