To provide the best welfare for your fit healthy donkeys you need to provide the following:
- Companionship, high fibre diet, 24 hour access to shelter, restricted grazing, training and daily handling, mental stimulation, environmental enrichment, daily grooming and health checks, regular veterinary care, regular feet care, regular dental care, illness prevention measures, daily stable management, pasture management and individual care.
- Young, elderly, or donkeys with veterinary conditions may have additional needs and differing management practices.

Fact sheets
The Donkey Sanctuary, based in the UK, has published a number of books and fact sheets. These are aimed at owners of donkeys or those considering getting a donkey.
These fact sheets include more detail on various aspects of donkey care and welfare. They provide information on common diseases, management of donkeys at different stages of their lives, dental problems, behaviour including details on mules and hinnies, and poisonous plants to name just a few.
