Emergency at the Sanctuary after torrential rain causing flooding
When we think of Malaga in southern Spain, most of us think of sunshine, but the area was hit by heavy rain over the weekend with over 120mm failing in just 12 hours. Some of you may have seen from our Facebook page that El Refugio del Burrito placed in Fuente de Piedra (Malaga) was badly affected.
Yesterday our team battled the elements to ensure that donkeys were evacuated from flooded areas of the sanctuary as this short video clip shows.
Thanks to everyone’s hard work we’re delighted to be able to reassure you that our donkeys and our people are all safe. However, the rain flooded a large part of the Sanctuary, in particular, all "new arrivals" area and two paddocks more were terribly affected.
We are going to need loads of help. Three stables are damaged and one is completely useless. The priority is to replace one of the mobile stables (approximately 2000 Euros) and build a proper water drainage system through all the Sanctuary so this doesn't happen again. This was a very scary event and we were very worried about our animals as it didn't stop raining in more than 12 hours.
Please, if you want to help to make back to normal and ensure the welfare of our animals, THIS IS the moment.
Any help is a whole world to us now.
